Justin's Office: Netscape/Explorer Bookshelf

This shelf has a bunch of books that all seem to be related to developing fancy stuff under Netscape Navigator. (And Microsoft Internet Explorer when necessary.) They include:

• General books on Web Development:
  • The Web Developer's Virtual Library is an encyclopaedia on the topic; nothing in much depth, but starting points for every topic.
• Books on Netscape:
  • The Netscape UFAQ, an unofficial FAQ run by some Netscape Champions.
  • An introduction to Netscape Communicator Font Support.
• Books on HTML, HTTP, and related Standards:
  • The spec for HTML 3.2, which is the current version that Netscape and Microsoft mostly now support.
  • The official spec for Cascading Style Sheets .
  • A beautiful, concise Cascading Style Sheet Summary Table, provided by C|net.
  • A nice article from Webmonkey on Cascading Style Sheets, explaining their use in reasonably clear English.
  • A guide to Positioning HTML Elements with Cascading Style Sheets.
  • The official HTTP 1.1 Standard.
• Books on XML and related standards:
  • The Official W3C Specs for XML, including The Official Recommended XML language spec, the current state of the proposal for XSL, the Extensible Stylesheet Language, and the current proposals for Linking in XML.
  • The highly-useful XML FAQ.
  • The fantastically-useful SIL XML page, including pretty much every link anywhere that relates to XML. (Warning: it's huge, but rich.)
• Books on plugins:
  • The Netscape 2.0 Guide to Programming Plug-ins.
  • The Netscape 3.0 Plugin Guide, full documentation of what's expected of a plugin, and what it can get from Netscape.
  • The Composer Plugin API Guide, which describes how to write plugins for Composer, Netscape's new (as of 4.0) HTML composition package.
• Books on Java:
  • The Java Language Tutorial, a nice little look at the ins and outs of programming on the Web.
  • A general Java Reference Manual.
  • A thick sheaf of white papers, describing a number of different Java APIs, including the JDK 1.1 Preview.
  • A good article, describing Incompatibilities in Microsoft's implementation of JDK 1.1.
  • Documentation on the Internet Foundation Classes, a rich collection of Java classes being promulgated by Netscape.
• Books on JavaScript:
  • The Netscape 2.0 Javascript Reference Manual.
  • The Netscape 3.0 Javascript Reference Manual.
  • A guide to What's new in Javascript 1.2.
  • Microsoft's Object Model for Scripting, which describes the many elements available to Javascript in MSIE 4.0.
  • The ECMAScript Standard, upon which JScript is officially based.
  • The reference pages for JScript, Microsoft's dialect of JavaScript.
  • The Dynamic HTML Zone, which talks in detail about the new buzzword (which is essentially Javascript done right)...
  • Mark's JScript Pages, a bunch of notes on JScript (including details of diffs between JScript and JavaScript), by the author of a JScript book.
• Books on Security:
  • The overview of Security in Netscape Communicator.
  • A more specific introduction to the Netscape Capability Classes, which actually implement most security in Communicator.
  • The Zigbert User's Guide, describing how to create signed JAR files for Netscape.
  • To get an object-signing certificate usable with Netscape, you need to go to the right location at Verisign.
  • An overall look at the Microsoft SDK for Java, version 2.01, which among other things covers security.
  • A collection of papers on Trust-based Security for Java, Microsoft's competing scheme for browser security modeling. Also, a newer version of the same article.
  • An article giving the details on signing Java applets for MSIE.
• Books on LiveConnect:
  • Netscape's Java Runtime Interface documentation, describing the environment for Java, and how it interfaces to the outside world.
  • Documentation on LiveConnecting Plugins with Java, a nice pair of step-by-step guides, showing how to enable communication in both directions.
  • The LiveConnect Developer's Guide, which contains a bunch of assorted documentation.
